Woo hoo ! Helen is back with us for another 2 day intensive workshop

Your Tutor: Helen Boor, who is a designer and pattern cutter, will be holding your hand through the complete process of dressmaking.  Giving you the confidence to pick up a pattern, trace your size, sewing up a practice piece, fitting your pattern to your shape, learning alteration techniques and transfer the alterations back to your pattern.

Deciphering terminology and pattern markings, having the opportunity to try and use a variety of pattern rulers and curves.

What you will learn:

  • Accurately take your measurements
  • Tracing your pattern pieces
  • Pattern markings / balance points
  • Bust adjustment
  • Raising or lowering darts
  • Shorten or lengthening dress / bodice
  • Broad / Narrow shoulder adjustments
  • Removing excess fabric for a better fit
  • transferring all your adjustments back to your pattern pieces

We have 2 x 6 hour sessions, where we do hope to cover everything up to the point, where you are ready to sew your actual dress at home.  Classes are tailored to your individual needs so you may not cover everything listed above and of course could encounter alternative issues which will be addressed.  However you will have the opportunity to learn from each other during the section on day 2, where we try on our practise pieces and talk through all the fitting corrections we will be making.

Your progress will also depend on your sewing ability,

You wil not be making your dress/shirt in your actual fabric, this is about the process of dressmaking to the point of pattern alteration.  Please do bring along your intended fabric though, if you want (so we can discuss choice/options) and wear the underwear (day 2) you would you wear with your dress – example if you will be wearing will shape wear / push up bra.

What is included:

  • Rosa Shirt/ Shirtdress Pattern by Tilly and the Buttons
  • Tracing paper & exclusive Wee Fabric Shop Pencil
  • Fabric for the practice piece
  • Threads
  • Use of our sewing machines & equipment

  • Removing excess fabric for a better fit

Skill Level: Confident beginner, you will have been expected to have sewn a couple of garments, the more confident you can trace, cut and sew helps us reach the all important alterations / fitting section of the class.

What to expect: Learning about patterns, terminology, sizing.  Taking your measurements, tracing of your size (if necessary – grading too).  Cutting out your traced pattern, then cutting out your practise piece (toile) in our fabric.  Sewing together your garment, remembering this is your toile, it will not be perfectly finished off and topstitched, this is to see how the pattern fits you.  Trying on your toile and the important bit is making it fit.  Transferring your alterations back to your pattern.

Please note: In class you will be making a toile (practice piece) in fabric provided by us that you will make markings on and adjustments to.  You will then have your adjusted pattern to make your own finished piece at home.

Lunch is not provided, please bring along something, alternatively we are next to Utopia Cafe and a Nisa shop.  Tea and coffee is in abundance.

SIZING: Please ensure you fall between the pattern sizing (size range is pictured in the photo gallery along with this class).  If you fall outwith the size range, please do get in touch, with demand we can offer an alternative class.  We want to be size inclusive and know that most standard patterns do not have a modern / realistic size range.

IMPORTANT : From 2021, classes are no longer refundable. There is a lot of work to be done before you arrive at your class. Preparation and time, materials sourced and paid for, fabrics cut to size, instructions written / printed out, thread matched, bobbins wound, and Tutors paid. Class sizes are small and everything is costed. For this reason we are also unable to transfer your place to another class. You may send someone in your place, just let us know their name and contact details in advance please. If you are unable to attend, do contact us as soon as possible 01463 263007, with exceptional circumstances we may be able to arrange something but this is not part of the booking terms and conditions.
